Website migration to AWS

A planned move.
A checked destination.

Moving a website is more than copying its files. We prepare the AWS environment, test the site and plan the switch around how your business uses it, including any new orders, memberships or content changes.

Working remotely with US businesses. Clear scope, shared milestones and a planned handover.

Check whether AWS is the right destination.

We begin with the current website, its hosting and the reason for the move. That might be a slow membership site, an unsuitable server or a need for clearer control over the infrastructure.

We review the application requirements, expected workload and maintenance responsibilities. Moving to AWS does not automatically resolve slow plugins or database work, so those issues should be identified before the migration plan is agreed.

Prepare and test before the switch.

A live store or membership site needs a plan for information created while the move is in progress. We agree on how updates are handled and whether a maintenance window is needed.

  • Review the current website, domain, email dependencies and access.
  • Prepare the agreed AWS server, storage, web stack and supporting services.
  • Copy the website to the destination and check configuration and URLs.
  • Test public pages, login, forms and relevant shopping or membership actions.
  • Plan the final data copy, DNS change, verification and fallback approach.

Protect the parts people forget.

Website hosting and email hosting may use the same domain but different services. The DNS plan needs to account for both. We also check HTTPS, scheduled tasks, backups and connections that depend on the old environment.

If the domain or page URLs change, redirects and search-related settings need separate attention. Keeping the same domain is a different task from moving to a new brand or URL structure.

A handover for the new environment.

After the switch, we check the agreed functions and explain how the new setup is arranged. The handover covers the responsibilities included in the project and any ongoing support arrangement.

The estimate depends on website size, custom features, the source environment and the amount of change. We discuss expected interruption and rollback limits rather than promising zero downtime for every migration.

Work behind the service

An AWS redesign and migration in practice.

Knowness already used AWS, but its membership website was slow. The project involved preparing a new environment, migrating the site and configuring services around the workload.

Questions before we start.

Can you move a website from one AWS server to another?

Yes. A migration can replace an existing AWS environment as well as move a website from another hosting provider.

Can the website stay on the same domain?

Yes. Keeping the existing domain is a common requirement. The plan needs to cover DNS, HTTPS and any services attached to that domain.

Will there be downtime?

That depends on the site and how new data must be handled. We agree on the migration window and testing plan with you before the switch.

Will the move affect search rankings?

Any migration needs care, particularly if URLs change. We check the agreed redirects and search-related settings, but no provider can guarantee that rankings will remain identical.
